Cheerful? I thought this was a euphemism for someone having just committed suicide... It is strikingly awful and beautiful that way.

My first thought was the game people used to play in middle school where there was a farmer who wanted to plant strawberries. Once the person telling the story gets to the part where they say the farmer is planting strawberries, they pinch the player's arm in multiple places. Then through pressure (said to be rain and thunder and the like) red dots appear on the player's arm and are said to be the "strawberries."
